The Trouble With Trump: 5 Concerning Bills The President-Elect Could Sign
As The Donald would say, this legislation will be "unpresidented".
Wondering what Trump's presidency will actually look like? We don't blame you. The controversial President-Elect promised change and it looks like that's exactly what America's going to get. But change isn't always a good thing. Change in the wrong direction can lead to devastating consequences for our country's future.
Here are five scary pieces of legislation Trump is likely to sign as POTUS.
The First Amendment Defense Act
The FADA is basically a "religious liberty" bill on steroids — and Trump has already promised to sign it. And unless you're privileged enough to be a straight, cis, white man, this bill miiiiiiight affect you. Not only would this bill legalize the discrimination of LGBTQ people based on their relationship status, but also to discriminate against single parents or non-married couples. Among other things, it would allow hospitals, governments, universities, and businesses to ignore same-sex marriage, deny women and LGBTQ people health care, and fire gay people.
The REINS Act
The Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny Act is an old friend of the GOP. The House has passed it three times since gaining a Republican majority in 2011, but never voted on in Congress due to Obama's promise to veto it. It would severely limit the powers of the presidency and undermine our country's system of checks and balances by requiring any new administrative rule costing over $100 million (a minuscule dollar amount in relation to typical federal government spending) to be approved by both chambers of Congress. This also means that the House, the Senate, or even a single senator could singlehandedly kill an existing law. Scary.
This bill was already blocked by Senate Democrats after Republicans sneakily added some anti-LGBTQ provisions to it. Nice try, GOP. Despite roughly 57% of the country's discretionary spending going to the military, Trump has promised to expand the military's ships, jets, and troops while in office.
The Midnight Rules Act
This bill, like the REINS Act, would hinder the Executive Branch's powers by preventing the creation of any major new rules between Election Day and Inauguration Day during a presidential election year (if a new POTUS would be coming in). The House has already passed this legislation, which could allow Congress to overturn any regulations finalized during the Obama administration's final days in the blink of an eye.
The Defunding of Planned Parenthood
Shocker. The grab-them-by-the-pussy-POTUS and his VP have their sights set on defunding Planned Parenthood. Not only will this restrict women's access to safe and legal abortions, but could also take away the health provider's $528 million dollars of federal funding used to screen for STDs, provide contraception, and more. You know what they say: "If it walks like a sexist pig and talks like a sexist pig . . ."
