Planned Parenthood's Cecile Richards Resigns. Will She Run For TX Governor?
Richards is stepping down after 10 years as president of the nonprofit health care organization.
BuzzFeed News has reported that Planned Parenthood’s Cecile Richards will be resigning from her role as president.
Richards has spent more than a decade working with the nonprofit health care organization, during which time she has become a prominent spokesperson for women’s reproductive rights.
Update: On Friday, Richards released a statement officially confirming her resignation from Planned Parenthood:
"Leading Planned Parenthood over the last 12 years has been the honor of my lifetime. Together, we have made real progress in this country, expanding access to services and making reproductive rights a central priority of our nation’s health care system. I’m deeply proud of the progress we’ve made for the millions of people Planned Parenthood health centers serve across the country each year. Planned Parenthood has been a trusted resource in this country for more than a century, and I will be leaving the organization well-positioned to serve and fight for our patients for a century more. Every day we see the incredible power that grassroots voices can have — there has never been a better moment to be an activist. You can bet I’ll be marching right alongside them, continuing to travel around the country advocating for the basic rights and health care that all people deserve. I’ve been an activist my entire life — and that won’t stop any time soon."
After Richards steps down, it is unclear who will replace her and become the new public face of Planned Parenthood.
But why would Richards leave Planned Parenthood in the first place?
As news of her resignation broke, supporters have been speculating that Richards could run for public office — perhaps even for governor of Texas.

Very few women have done more for women than Cecile Richards. I hope this is a move towards public office, but regardless, she will be missed. https://t.co/SLgJhoj8dB— Samantha Franks (@SammiSpeaks) January 24, 2018
Is Cecile Richards going to run for governor or another public office?
Interestingly enough, Richards’ own mother and self-described idol was the governor of Texas from 1991 to 1995.
While Richards has never had a formal position in politics, she has plenty of other relevant political experience. She worked as Nancy Pelosi’s chief of staff before joining Planned Parenthood and became a public face in debates surrounding contraceptive health care coverage, abortion access, and federal funding of Planned Parenthood.
