Even Science Agrees, Women Need More Sleep Than Men Because We’re Smarter
Go ahead, hit that snooze button.
Forget beauty sleep — the real reason women need more shut eye than men is because of their brains.
A study conducted by researchers are Loughborough University found that women need an average of 20 more minutes of sleep per night than men do.
Why the difference? Because women use their brains more. Women tend to multitask more than men, causing more stress on the brain. Our brains are wired differently and more complex, leading us to need more recovery time during sleep.
According to Professor Jim Horne, the director of the Sleep Research Center at Loughborough University:
“The more of your brain you use during the day, the more of it that needs to recover and, consequently, the more sleep you need. Women tend to multi-task — they do lots at once and are flexible — and so they use more of their actual brain than men do. Because of that, their sleep need is greater. A man who has a complex job that involves a lot of decision-making and lateral thinking may also need more sleep than the average male — though probably still not as much as a woman.”
While it’s common knowledge that adults on average need eight hours of sleep per night, many adults do not get the rest their bodies and minds need.
So what happens if you don’t get enough zzz’s throughout the night?
Women who don’t get adequate rest are more likely to have serious health issues, depression, and/ or psychological distress than men.
So go ahead and hit the snooze button. Your busy, multitasking brain deserves it.
