This Is Us Season 2 Premiere Date, Trailer, Spoilers And More
Try not to cry before the end of this post — but we won't blame you if you do. This Is Us is coming back to NBC for season 2, and if it's anything like season 1 — and we expect it will be — we are in for a major emotional journey. As we get ready to welcome the Pearson family back into our living rooms week after week, here's everything you need to know ahead of the much-awaited premiere, including when it is, every trailer and sneak peek available and spoilers for the season ahead.
When Is This Is Us Coming Back?
The wait is almost over! This Is Us returns with season 2 on Tuesday, September 26, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
It will air each week in the same Tuesday time slot — not on Thursdays, as was previously announced — after The Voice and before Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders.
This Is Us Trailers and Sneak Peeks
NBC has released two clips from the season 2 premiere of This Is Us.
In the first emotional scene, Randall (Sterling K. Brown) asks his mother, Rebecca (Mandy Moore), about the decision to adopt him as a baby.
Moving between flashback and current day clips, Rebecca recalls the moments just after giving birth to two healthy babies and losing her third, when her husband, Jack (Milo Ventimiglia), convinced her to adopt baby Randall. "He was so determined that you were meant to be. Meant to be ours," the matriarch says.
"He pushed a stranger on me, and that stranger became my child, and that child became my life. He became you," Rebecca told her adopted son.
If you can still see through the sheet of tears currently blocking your vision, let's move on to the second clip: A short teaser video that flashes through scenes from the upcoming season.
The clip superimposes a line from the above scene, Rebecca telling Randall, "Your father wasn't perfect, but he was pretty damn close," over a flash of clips, and despite the short length of the clip, there is a lot to unpack here.
The teaser opens with some generic shots of a smiling adult Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) presenting a tiny birthday cake, presumably to celebrate Kate's 37th birthday. Then we see Jack punching a man in a bar before going back to sweet shots Jack and child Randall. We get a pinch of drama when we see adult Kevin (Justin Hartley) kissing his ex-wife Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge), then some happiness on what looks like Jack and Rebecca's wedding day. Things end on a tense note as Jack looks at Rebecca's serious gaze.
All in all, we get the sense that this season is going to have a heavy Jack storyline, and we are not complaining.
As a bonus, the This Is Us cast previewed what we can expect for season 2 in a third video, in which we learn that season 2 will begin the morning after the season 1 finale. Randall and his wife, Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), are considering adoption, Kate and Toby have just moved in together and Kevin is deciding whether to get back together with Sophie or accept a movie deal.
"There's change afoot," Milo describes.
This Is Us Season 2 Spoilers
We don't know everything about the second season of This Is Us, but we do have a bit of information. Here are the season 2 premiere spoilers
As mentioned in the above clip, season 2 of This Is Us will pick up the day after Jack and Rebecca's split. "You're picking up the story line the morning after Jack has left the house, and what happens next," creator Dan Fogelman told Entertainment Weekly. "It's intense — and it's all in the first five minutes of the show." So you only have to wait a tiny bit longer before finding out the couple's fate.
The current-day story will begin on the Big Three's 37th birthday, much like the first season picked up on the Big Three's 36th birthday.
Although we still don't know how Jack dies — just that it happens sometime between the flashbacks and current-day — Fogelman told reporters in August, "The first episode has a big, giant piece of the puzzle."
We'll begin with Kate living with Toby and pursuing her singing career. Kevin will be gearing up for his big Ron Howard film with guest star Sylvester Stallone while simultaneously figuring out his relationship with long distance ex-wife Sophie. Randall will be dealing with the loss of his biological father, William (Ron Cephas Jones) while looking into adopting another child with Beth.
This is going to be good. We can hardly wait for the season 2 premiere.
Watch This Is Us on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
