How To Pick Out The Perfect Holiday Outfits
Velvet, Sequins, Fringe-- OH MY!
The holidays are a time of nonstop parties. From Thanksgiving to New Years, you're practically inundated with them. Whether it be your Office Christmas Party or what to wear for that night at the bar when you go back home, here is your holiday style guide.
OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY
The perfect Office Christmas Party outfit screams: "I know you see me slaving away at a cubicle all week, but did you know I'm actually kind of hot and trendy in my personal life?" Of course, you want to scream that message appropriately and definitely in a way that's not too drunk (although you'll be tempted.)
YES: a cute cocktail dress, textured pant (a fun print, or try velvet?), a fashionable jumpsuit, a statement necklace.
NO: Being too drunk, anything too provocative, hitting on your boss.
MEETING BOYFRIEND'S PARENTS
Proper and trendy is best.
YES: turtleneck dress, little booties, cropped jackets, sweet flats
NO: the mini dress you would wear to the club, a bad attitude
THE "I'M BACK HOME AND ALL MY HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDS ARE HERE" PARTY
One goal here: look hot. But you don't want to try too hard. You wan't to show how great your life has been since high school. YOU are the one who actually made it out of town! Be the effortless girl that says, "yes, I did trip in the cafeteria and spill all over myself freshman year, but now I have a great job with health benefits and a boyfriend who doesn't care about football!"
YES: tight jeans, cute boots, classy shirt, statement necklace, spunky attitude.
NO: Your high school marching band outfit.
HOLIDAY DATE NIGHT
Sexy, with a holiday color palate.
YES: Go monochromatic-- red pants and red blouse, tight jeans and a sequined shirt with a cute pair of heels, blouse and a statement necklace or earrings.
NO: An ugly Christmas sweater. Actually... that might be kind of funny. Do it.
The rule here is don't be a Grinch: actually participate. And of course-- the uglier the better. You don't want to come in an outfit and not have anyone think you're actually dressed up. Thrift stores are great places to find old ugly sweaters. You can even have a girls night in at your house, buy supplies, and make your own!
And don't forget, you can always do a joint outfit with your friends if you're feeling reluctant to dress up alone.
THE FUN ONE YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO GO TO
Then there's always that ONE party you actually want to go to. The one with the friends you really want to see. The one the boy you have a crush on will be at. In this case, holiday glitz is best, and it's relatively simple to do on a budget.
YES:If you're wary of dressing too out of the box, a LBD with a fun statement piece works too. Try black slacks with a sequined shirt. Black leather pants with a cute blouse. Sequined and/or fringe jackets are a yes. Deep forest greens, mauve, and gold are all great colors for the holidays. Of course, December is the perfect time to sport that red lip. And glitter eyeshadow? Why not.
NO: Baggy jeans. Too low key. A glitzy holiday party is an opportunity to take a risk and being underdressed and uncomfortable is uber awkward.
Have fun, and be safe this holiday season.
