My best friend just got pregnant and has been inundated with the question: so, when are you quitting work? Her response is: well, never. She can't afford to. She's the bread winner in her family, and, frankly, she likes her job. Additionally-- and here's a real brain buster-- we live in an age where women can actually "have it all" (well, except reproductive rights maybe....): the marriage, the job, and now, kids.
Her one gripe though is this- she is still succumbing, and feeling limited by, the stereotypical gender roles that women have frequently been assigned to. Why is it that as soon as she got pregnant everyone assumed she would quit her job? Why does everyone feel so uncomfortable when they find out she makes more money than her husband? Why is she still the one making dinner and cleaning the house?
Maybe her husband should quit his job!
An article by Jezebel entitled "Women Are Doing the Man Things But Men Won't Do the Lady Things" expands on this phenomenon. While women are blurring the gender lines and starting to partake in activities that are archetypically "male," (and in fact, we're expected to) men aren't doing the same. Women are the ones making the bread at work and they're picking it up at the grocery store on the way home too.
Additionally, being a stay at home mom is a rarity. Two income households are essentially a necessity.
Life be expensive.
So, in our attempt to have it all, are we now just doing it all too?
An article by Time Magazine entitled "Why Women Are Better at Everything" substantiates that maybe women do it all because they're just, well...better at it all. When it came to finances, "women were more likely than men to make money in the market, mostly because they didn’t take as many risks."
It doesn't end there. Columnist David Weidner noted that women “do almost everything better” than men — from politics to corporate management to investing."
Can I get an AMEN to that?
Listen, men are great. We need 'em, we love 'em, I spend a lot of time trying to figure out what makes them tick. But Margaret Thatcher put it best when she said, "If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman."
It's true. We all know it: Nasty Women get shit done. Men might talk about it, but women actually do it, and we do it meticulously. It's time to flip the script. The old gender constructs are dead and gone, and it really is women who are ruling the roost. And you know what-- we're good at it.
So here are some quotes from strong women who validate just how much women rule.
Never dim your light for someone else
Sometimes, you just have to pop off
"Be yourself, everyone else is taken-Oscar Wilde"
Never doubt yourself
YOU define what womanhood is
