1. Revenge, The Best Dish Served With Cookies
If you haven't already heard about the woman and her daughter who went to lunch at a Neiman Marcus Cafe, only to enjoy the chocolate chip cookies so much that they asked to buy the recipe, you missed out. The story about a woman who thought obtaining the recipe would cost her only $2.50, only to discover she'd been charged $250 and acted out revenge by starting a viral email chain containing the recipe has been circulating since the late 1990s when AOL first informed you "you've got mail" and many people (like those of us today) burned fuel off of the spirit of revenge. Check it out below.
(Recipe may be halved): 2 cups butter 4 cups flour 2 tsp. baking soda 2 cups granulated sugar 2 cups brown sugar 5 cups blended oatmeal (measure oatmeal and blend in blender to a fine powder) 24 oz. chocolate chips 1 tsp. salt 1 8 oz. Hershey bar (grated) 4 eggs 2 tsp. baking powder 3 cups chopped nuts (your choice) 2 tsp. vanilla
Cream the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla; mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda. Add chocolate chips, Hershey bar and nuts. Roll into balls and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet..Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Makes 112 cookies.
2. You Gotta Love Revenge. But Is It True?
The legendary story went viral and probably passed through your email stream a couple of times back in the day, but has since been disputed. Head to Neiman's website, and the tale is there along with the recipe. Free of charge. ''We would never, ever charge for a recipe,'' said Kellie Patrick, the media relations manager for Neiman Marcus. ''We gladly give our recipes away for the asking.''
There's also the fact that Neiman's has never had a "Neiman Marcus Cafe" and if they did have one, we highly doubt the department store would sell you two saladsfor a total of $9.95. (And if anyone can point us to the direction of a Neiman store hawking scarves for twenty bucks, please pay it forward.)
3. The Truth's In the Cookie
The only truth to this story is that the "$250 cookie recipe" is that they really are delicious. The variation on oatmeal chocolate chip cookies makes about 112 cookies and will be the envy of all your friends.
