Science Says Women Need To Sleep In More Because Of Their 'Complex' Brains

Women are multi-tasking machines that have complex brains and should be treated as such.

Next time you find yourself being nudged awake too early by your guy, you can let him know he's literally doing damage to your brain.

It's a well known fact that the average adult requires up to eight hours of sleep a night to maintain their health and function throughout a day. While others can get by a little more easily on as little as six hours, the same is not necessarily true for many of us, namely women.

According to the former director of England’s Loughborough University Sleep Research Center, Jim Horne, women's brains are "wired differently" from men and thus have a greater need for sleep than them too. "Women tend to multitask — they do lots at once and are flexible — and so they use more of their actual brain than men do."

After surveying a set of 210 middle-aged amen and women, the study also revealed that the amount of sleep an individual needs is necessitated by the complexity of the brain and how intensively it is used throughout a day.

"The more of your brain you use during the day, the more of it that needs to recover and, consequently, the more sleep you need... Women tend to multi-task — they do lots at once and are flexible — and so they use more of their actual brain than men do. Because of that, their sleep need is greater," Horn told Mail Online in an interview.

Translation: women use so much more of their brains that they are actually tired out more, ergo: they require more recovery time.

With one of the major functions of sleep existing to allow recovery and repair of the brain, it only makes sense that a person who works their brain more might be tired at the end of a long day. (You can trace that heavy sleep you get after an all night back to that logic.)

Note, there is a dark side to this new found information as well. According to the study, women are hit harder by the effects of sleep deprivation. “For women, poor sleep is strongly associated with high levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression, and anger,” says Horne. These feelings are not contributed to the same degree of men who experience sleep deprivation, meaning women are more susceptible to the negative side effects of sleep deprivation.

The ultimate takeaway: women deserve more sleep.
