Get Your 90s On This Halloween With Lisa Frank Inspired Costumes

This Halloween season is the perfect time to embrace your first grade style from yesteryear and bring on the nostalgia. We're talking unicorns, dolphins, leopards, kittens and buckets of rainbows, ladies.

While all of your friends are rushing to their favorite DIY boards for cute, slightly trite, black cat and witch costumes, an embrace of the Lisa Frank world will have you swirling in effortless DIY costume ideas. Your first step to crafting the greatest Lisa Frank 90s throwback costume at the trick-or-treat ball this season includes the color: rainbow. That's right, leave no neon/bright color untouched when patching together your costume, you're gonna need all of the colorful eyeshadow, temporary die and shoelaces to pull this one off.

Markie the Unicorn!

What you'll need:

  • 1 holographic or white dress
  • Neon colored tissue Paper hint: go for hot pink, orange, yellow, lime green, turquoise and purple
  • Party hat
  • Metallic cord
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue
  • Safety Pins + Bobby Pins
  • Colorful shoes


  1. For your mane and tail you're going to want to fold two sheets of tissue together in half (hamburger style) and then into fourths
  2. Cut fringe into all of layers BUT leave about one inch by the folded end uncut
  3. Roll the paper like a cone along the folded end to form a tassel
  4. Tie the fringe on to your piece of cord.
  5. Repeat with your next tassel and tie it about five inches from the last tassel. Do one of each color for both the mane and the tail
  6. For assembly: use safety pins to fasten the top tassel to the center back of your dress. Pull your hair up into a high pony tail, tie the string of the mane around the pony tail holder.
  7. Bobby pin the top tassel to your hair

Spotty + Dotty!

This one's perfect for your paired costume with your BFF.

What you'll need:

  • White top and shorts or dress, or romper
  • Felt in white, purple, hot pink, orange, yellow, green, turquoise
  • 1 Headband
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Scissors
  • Paint brush for prop


  1. Use the different felt colors (except white) and scissors to cut out all different sized spots spots
  2. Use the white felt to cut out large tear drop shaped dog ears
  3. Separately wrap the edge of both of the ears around the side of the headband and use glue to fasten
  4. Glue spots to each ear.
  5. On a flat surface place the remaining spots, fading in a rainbow as desired
  6. Glue the spots down

Panda Painter!

What you'll need:

  • 1 set of overalls
  • Purple and white baseball tee (hint: find on Amazon or American Apparel)
  • Rainbow Heart Patch
  • White Sneakers
  • Propeller Hat
  • Paint in Pink, orange, yellow, lime green, turquoise, and purple
  • Felt in pink and purple
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Empty Paint Bucket and Wide Paint Brush for props


  1. Use purple felt to cut out two bear ear shapes from purple felt
  2. Use pink felt to cut out two slightly smaller ear shapes
  3. Attach the pink ears onto the purple ears with hot glue
  4. Pinch the ears at the center and place a bit of hot glue in-between to hold in place.
  5. Paint all of the red sections of your propeller hat hot pink and all of the blue sections turquoise
  6. Then paint the the top of the brim green and the underside turquoise. Set aside to tet dry.
  7. Using the “tab” you created with the pinch in your ears, glue the ears to the side of the hat. 5.Attach the patch to the overalls with a safety pin.
  8. Paint the paint bucket with each color around the paint bucket so it looks like a rainbow l
